Born on September 22nd, 1966, scaling in at 53 kgs,
Agustin has ridden about 200 winners, placing him amongst the most experienced of Spanish jockeys.
He made his riding debut in 1982 at the age of 16 and became Champion Apprentice that same season.
The title saw him take part in the Long John International Apprentices Championship held in Europe in 1983.
Fellow riders that he competed against included Gerald Mosse, Richard Quinn and Marco Paganini.
Even though he has ridden and won more races on the flat, his burning passion is steeplechasing, at which he was very good until jump racing was stopped in Spain in 1992.
Given the chance, he would love to ride in the Grand National.
On the track, Agustin is widely rated as having an excellent pair of hands and has been known to nurse back horses to give of their best where others would have lost hope.
In the 1980's, Agustin's master was none other than Miguel Alonso, the trainer of Royal Gait. Agustin was the horse's regular work rider and also rode him in a race.
For much of the 1990's, his boss was Ramon Avial, who entrusted Agustin as chief work rider and 2nd stable jockey.
Many a morning do I remember Agustin riding the great 13-race winning grey, Sur...poetry in motion.
Agustin's biggest win to date was the 1991 Gran Premio de Andalucia on El Visionista, carrying a huge 64kgs.
He also won the 1993 Copa de Criadores on Berdie.
His favourite jockey: John Reid.
