A native of Lima, Peru, he was born on December 8th, 1974. Standing at 5 ft 3", he tacks at 112 lbs and mainly rides on the Californian top tracks of Santa Anita & Hollywood.
His first ride was on June 14th, 1994 (quite late at 19.5 years) and his first trip to the winners' circle came a month later on July 17th, 1994 when he was apprenticed to P.G.Johnson.
Jose's big race triumphs include a brilliantly ridden "come-from-behind" rush in the Breeders' Cup Mile on Val Royal. He has also won other notable Group 1 races such as the Beverley D. at Arlington and at Santa Anita: the Oak Tree Leaf, San Carlos Handicap together with the Oak Tree Breeders' Cup Mile (Group 2).
He lists Val Royal as his favourite horse with Santa Anita as his top track. His ambitions for the future include winning the US Triple Crown.
