A double DVD.
Flat Racing:
Clare Balding concentrates on the flat racing scene, counting down the 25 greatest races ever run. An amazing selection from Sea Biscuit’s defeat of War Admiral in 1938 to Persian Punch’s emotional third triumph in the Jockey Club Cup at Newmarket and High Chaparral’s amazing victory in the 2003 Breeders’ Cup meeting – the closest ever.

Interspersed we have the likes of Mill Reef and Secretariat, Grundy and Shergar and Royal Academy and Cigar, amazing horses from around the flat racing world. This official double DVD tells the story of Best Mate and those involved with him, including trainer Henrietta Knight, jockey Jim Culloty and owner Jim Lewis.
Best Mate quickly became the 'People's Champion' following his successive Gold Cup victories at Cheltenham in 2002, 2003 and 2004. His first race win in Britain was also at Cheltenham in 1999. It was therefore fiiting that a ceremony, following his tragic death at Exeter on November 1st 2005, was held at Cheltenham on December 10th.

Best Mate had become the first horse since Arkle in the 1960's to win three successive Gold Cups. He then established himself as the most popular race horse in Britain since Desert Orchid. A burst blood vessel meant that he was unable to defend his crown at Cheltenham in 2005. But, despite looking in great condition, Best Mate sadly Best Mate died during his seasonal return at Exeter.

This programme offers an insight into a wonderful, and much loved race horse.

Disc 1 tells his life story, whilst Disc 2 is a record of his National Hunt races. Clare Balding reveals the everyday lives of the racing community of Lambourn.
The West Berkshire town of Lambourn, often called 'The Valley of the Racehorse', is unique in that almost the whole community is involved in horseracing. This observational documentary series, presented by Clare Balding, takes a look at the everyday lives of the racing fraternity - from top jockeys and trainers such as Henrietta Knight and Mick Channon, down to the stable lads and saddlers.

It takes in the highs and lows of the season's meetings, the foaling period and a behind the scenes look at the day-to-day running of some of the country's top stables. George Duffield is the senior rider in the weighing room. Born in 1946, he entered racing (earning 19/6 a week) in the early 1960s toward the end of an era dominated by the toughest of men and toughest of standards: trainers like Sam Armstrong and his own mentor Jack Waugh, and jockeys like the legendary Breasley and Piggott.
George has also been associated with countless top-class horses, such as his 1992 Oaks and St Leger winner User Friendly and more recently the Eclipse hero Giant's Causeway and the dual Champion Stakes heroine Alborada.
Finally, George has experience of racing all round the world, and not just the leading racing nations: in Jamaica he had bricks thrown at him during a race and in the paddock one day even found himself in the midst of a gunfight! A true son of Yorkshire, George has never been afraid to speak his mind or fight his corner, a trait that has led to some intriguing confrontations with authority. Click to buy New!
Peter Walwyn, who has just retired, was for more than thirty-five years one of the country's foremost racehorse trainers - and about the only trainer for whom racegoers and racing professionals alike have a deep and genuine affection.

He was the first flat racing trainer to send out more than 100 winners in a season, was champion trainer and trained the great Derby winner Grundy. But the appeal of the book lies less in Peter Walwyn's achievements on the track, great though they may be, but in the nature of the man - one of the last great traditionalists of the turf.

His lanky physique and eccentric behaviour led to him being nicknamed 'Basil Fawlty'; he is a man with strong and outspoken opinions on every aspect of the racing game. He is also a fund of marvellous racing stories: in his long career, he has encountered scores of legendary racing personalities, from Lester Piggott to Frankie Dettori, and describes them with humorous relish.

Handy All The Way is not a conventional autobiography, but a marvellous collection of anecdotes by one of racing's best-loved characters.

A review by a reader who has already read the book
Rarely does an author manage to capture and define the rich and varied mix of people and circumstances that go into making a championship racehorse. And for good reason. It is a bit like cooking up a stew that has all sorts of spices thrown in. There are certain things you can control - the amount of detail to include, the descriptions of the people and races, the pace of the story - but in the end you're never quite sure what you'll have until you finish. On a larger scale, that is what happens in the breeding and racing of thoroughbreds, and lovers of the sport will be first to admit it. That is why Ruffian was such a breath taking surprise in her 10 unbeaten starts, and such a heart wrenching loss in her final defeat. It is also what makes Schwartz's account so moving.

For anyone who loves to watch thoroughbreds run, who is captivated by their beauty and spirit, this book is a must. Schwartz got the recipe right, and you will feel that you have been in the presence of a champion by the time you have finished.
