The jockey with probably the most stamps in his passport and air-miles to spend !
Gary has ridden in 26 different countries throughout the world (his most recent in Poland & Slovakia) and gained 15 Group wins to his tally of around 635 winners to 10.03.05 . Most recently he was crowned Champion Jockey in Dubai in the 2003/04 season....a result that shows tyhe hard graft he puts in.
In his travels, he has spent his time wisely and is conversant in Spanish & Swedish along with being very apt with computers, internet & e-mail.
A prolific rider of Arabian horses, he is a very popular & much respected jockey in the Middle East & Asia as well as in the UK.
In addition to riding for all the big stables in racing, he values very much his 10 year working relationship with John Gosden.
He was the first of four jockeys to join Godolphin, in 1994, and has had a 6 year working relationship with them.
In the winter of 2000/01, Gary took up a riding contract in the Gulf which has seen him reel in no less than 49 winners in Arab and Thoroughbred races.
In 2001, Gary won the biggest race in Bahrain, the Emir's Cup on Bracken.
Due to the foot & mouth crisis in the UK, Gary decided to return to the UK on April 27th, 2001.
United Arab Emirates
In late June, 2002, Gary announced that he was teaming up with an upcoming trainer in the United Arab Emirates, Allan Smith, who has set up a winter operation there whilst his son trains horses in Belgium and then also winters them in Dubai.
Gary first started riding in Dubai in 1993/94 and is currently in his 11th season out there. He is a regular top 10 finisher in the jockeys' standings and to 10.03.05 is the 4th All Time leading jockey by purses and wins with AED 12m and 180 wins respectively.
But to cap it all, 2003/04 proved his best and he won the Dubai championship with 46 winners, 12 ahead of Wayne Smith.
