The UK's Champion Jockey in 1997, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2002 and 2003. Kieren was at the top of the table in 2000 until a nasty fall at Royal Ascot ruled him out for the rest of this season.
By any standards, to ride 4 double centuries out of six & average a win rate of 20% is a remarkable feat.
Kieren was 2nd in the Irish apprentices table in 1987 and then moved to the UK in 1988.
He and his agent, David Pollington, probably share the loyalty record as they have teamed up together for the past 14 years !
Kieren used to be one of the top jockeys on the Northern circuit of England. In the early 1990s he started to make his mark overseas as well.
In Spain, for example, he was an instant hit with the top stable there, Cuadra Madrilena, and professionals admired his quiet and efficient style on a horse.
Back in the UK, his most ardent fans were the Ramsdens for whom he rode regularily & with much success. His annual strike rate was also growing steadily and Kieren was earning the respect & employ of many trainers. In 1995, he doubled his winners to 92.
Then the break that all jockeys dream of arrived with the news that he was to be Henry Cecil's stable jockey for 1997.
Cecil and Fallon were a magic combination for two and a half seasons.
The results are listed below and their achievements will go down as one of the best trainer/stable jockey teams in UK turf history.
Kieren has worked hard to improve himself as a jockey. He has spent winters in America learning the pace.
I categorise him in the "intense" bracket of jockeys along with Piggott, Kinane, Asmussen & Cochrane---the quiet, meditating type who analyse a race from every angle and at least a week before it is run.
During a race, he has the ability to relax & switch his mount off but at the same time encourage it to deliver it's best effort in the drive to the line.
If I were to be fussy, I would like him to ride a bit more tucked up, more stream-lined and not be so vertical in the saddle especially in a finish. But he gets the job done and horses run for him.
He has great mental strength and patience. His mounts often seemed to have joined the race 200 yards from the finish. Witness his effort on King's Best in the Guineas or on Fanstastic Light in Dubai. I am particularily impressed by the way he rides Newmarket's Rowley Mile. In ealry, 2004 he explained in detail how he rides it in a Channel 4 interview where he walked the last 3 furlongs of the track.
This interview should be instilled in the minds of all jockeys, learners and veterans.
For the winter of 2000, Kieren rode in Dubai in his rehabilitation for his arm.
Toward the end of his victorious 2001 flat season, he announced that he would no longer be retained by Sir Micheal Stoute as some owners had pressurised Stoute to use other jockeys.
In early January, 2003, Kieren revealed in an exclusive interview to the Sunday Times, that he was at a rehabilitation center in Ireland
to overcome an affection to alcohol.
It was a courageous thing to admit. Kieren has now turned a new leaf and it is there for all to see. He is now much more at ease with himself
and looks relaxed, healthy and confident. The pay-off was that it was clearly reflected on the racecourse as he once was again leading the table by early May.
Kieren rode a lovely waiting race on Russian Rythmn to lift his 3rd 1,000 Guineas since 1997.
Kieren then had the pick of the bunch from a very open Derby field and selected Kris Kin as his ride. The son of Kris S. looked an oil painting in the paddock and Kieren rode a perfectly timed race to lift his 10th classic, and 11 of the last 39 Classics that have been run since 1997 in the UK (26%)---not bad !
In early, 2004, in the usual jockey merry-go-round that occurs, it was announced that Keiren had been appointed as the Aga Khan's jockey for the owner's runners in the UK, which should help Kieren cement his alliance with Stoute. However, for the first proper time ,Kieren lost the jockeys' title to a re-invigorated Frankie Dettori as Kieren struggled to recover from a confidence crisis after the Ballinger Ridge incident at Lingfield.
For those wishing to see an insight into Kieren's daily rituals, have a look at his unofficial web site created by fan, Debbie Knight, at www.joinme.net/kierenfallon
2004....The Ballinger Ridge incident
Florida 2004/05
Kieren received a lot of attention when joining the top jocks in the established Florida colony. Easily recognisable in the pack of silks, he rode some good races but he did not do himself any favours by maliging the riding surface out there.
Ballydoyle 2005
Something that was rumoured as a certainty in early 2004 became hard fact when Kieren replaced Jamie Spencer as first jockey to the powerful Coolmore/Tabor team, trained by Aidan O'Brien.
Yes, it was a hard choice to abandon Stoute after all the support he had demonstrated. But loyalty in racing, whilst admirable is hardly a quality one can expect of a jockey when their careers are so short.
However, there are plenty of reasons why it made sense for him to move - Ireland, Ballydoyle, great horses, stallion rights, Irish Championship,
peace from the media
in addition to a retainer of I would estimate £500,000 should be enough to sway any jockey. And bang !, before May had hardly started, Kieren again gave everyone that "Rowley Mile" lesson mentioned above and rode all his jockey colleagues to sleep with 2 beautiful rides in both Guineas.
It was this plus my hunch about Oscar Urbina on Rebel Rebel that led me to hold a very juicy 576 - 1 dual forecast ticket in my hand (mention of how much was on would be rude!).
To November 6th, 2005, Keiren now has 164 Group races--55 Group 1s, 47 Group 2s and 64 Group 3's.
