Along with Steve Cauthen, Cash is recognised as having introduced the American crouch style that is now a common feature in Europe.
He is arguably the most admired jockey amongst fans & professionals anywhere.
For owners, having Cash ride for them was like having the birthday treat one looked forward to as a kid.
Whether it was walking into the paddock to greet him or hearing what he had to say as he slid off side-saddle after the race, the thrill was great.
Cash was born on 15.3.62 in Agar, South Dakota, but hails from Texas and speaks 3 languages (English, French & Spanish) all very fluently.
His family are very involved in horse-racing in the United States.
His parents run a very successful ranch in El Paso, Texas and his younger brother Steve (who rode as an apprentice for two years) is a prolific trainer of winners in the US.
After retiring in early 2001, Cash & his family have been working to set up a new racetrack in their local area in Texas.
Cash's record speaks for itself. He has been & done it all and is still hungry. After race-riding, he plans to take up horse breeding.
In 2000 he jetted over regularily to the US to ride for his brother. The pair teamed up with a 6th place in the Preakness Stakes with a horse called Snuck In.
However, Cash's main base was France from 1982 to 2000, where he had a long-standing and very successful retainer for the Niarchos family as their retained jockey.
Cash rode nearly 3,000 winners in his career and has been Champion jockey 5 times in France. He has also won 90 Group 1's, 51 of
which have been gained in France.
- Winners: ~ 3,000
- Champion US Apprentice in 1979
- Champion Jockey, France, 5 times
- French Derby: 4 times, Suave Dancer, Hernando, Dream Well, Montjeu.
In early February, 2001, Cash announced that he would not be returning to Europe to ride for the Niarchos family.
It looks like he is returning to Texas to continue his career, be it riding or horse-dealing.
Whilst not stating that he had fully retired from riding, we wish him all the best in whatever he decides to do and we are sure he will be successful at it.
Good luck Cash and thanks for everything that you have given to the sport, a lot of us have looked up to you in the past.
