It is almost unheard of for a rider to start their career in a country other than their own in their first year.
Yet this is exactly what Orlando did in 2000.......off to Spain, the mini-Panama of Europe for jockeys where such notable riders as Oscar Urbina, Luis-Alberto Urbano, the Duke of Albuquerque, Jose Simo, Luis Urbano Snr, Guillermo Arizkoretta, Jorge Horcajada, Manuel Diaz and Jose-Luis Martinez originated from before making their mark outside Spain.
The wily Orlando appeared very quickly on the scene in Spain at the start of June 2000.
He rode for Irish trainer Eddie Creighton in Mijas and was soon raking up doubles on the card there.
So successful was Orlando that he ended up the leading rider at Mijas in terms of victories.
By the end of 2000, he was 3rd in the apprentice table in Spain with 12 winners from 87 rides and 7th in the overall jockeys table in Spain.
In 2001, he rode his first winner on Easter Monday and then rode his second winner 5 days later for Dermot Weld. We then heard that success was getting to Orlando a little too quickly and his opportunities started to dwindle.
However, he resurfaced in the summer of 2002 riding mostly on the northern tracks in the UK for trainer D.Carroll and has since seen his allowance be reduced to 3 lbs.
Orlando rides at 8st 4 lbs and expect a lot more from him.....his 3 lb allowance should soon disappear.
