Born on 30th November, 1946, made George - up to March 2005 - the oldest jockey in England.

George served a 7 year apprenticeship with Jack Waugh and had to wait 5 years to ride his first winner , at Yarmouth in 1967.

George has always been one of the consistent jockeys in the UK, regularily getting 70-100 winners..
He holds a Guinness World record for the most consecutive wins on a horse, 11, and 13 in total when riding Spindrifter in 1980.

His big break was the very successful partnership he had with the filly, User Friendly. Together they won the 1992 Oaks, Irish Oaks & Yorkshire Oaks.
Trouble in runnning denied the pair an Arc win, going down by a neck to Subotica.

With George, the name Sir Mark Prescott immediately comes to mind. Jockey & trainer have teamed up together for the last 38 years with great success, especially the back-to-back Champion Stakes win with Alborada.

In 1999, George received the call to ride Aristotle, the winner of the Racing Post Trophy. Aidan O'Brien used him for big race rides in 2000 and George rose to the task every time.

Before the 2000 Eclipse, Walter Swinburn pointed out that George's greatest asset were his strong legs in a finish. We witnessed that in the magnificent duel between Giant's Causeway & Kalanisi.

George lifted the 2001 John Smith's Cup at York on the tough stayer, Foreign Affairs. The pair later put up a noble display in the Arc.

In 2003, still going strong at 56, he landed an incredible training feat by Prescott by steering home Chivalry in the Cambridgeshire and thereby notching a remarkable 800 wins between him and Sir Mark Prescott. He made it 801 later that evening on the Wolverhampton sand!

In early 2004, George announced that he would no longer be holding the 1st retainer position with Prescott but would ride on a "when available" basis for him. Heavy tarvelling commitments were cited as the reason for George wanting to be based nearer his home in the North.

George Duffield is the senior rider in the weighing room. Born in 1946, he entered racing (earning 19/6 a week) in the early 1960s toward the end of an era dominated by the toughest of men and toughest of standards: trainers like Sam Armstrong and his own mentor Jack Waugh, and jockeys like the legendary Breasley and Piggott.
George has also been associated with countless top-class horses, such as his 1992 Oaks and St Leger winner User Friendly and more recently the Eclipse hero Giant's Causeway and the dual Champion Stakes heroine Alborada.
Finally, George has experience of racing all round the world, and not just the leading racing nations: in Jamaica he had bricks thrown at him during a race and in the paddock one day even found himself in the midst of a gunfight! A true son of Yorkshire, George has never been afraid to speak his mind or fight his corner, a trait that has led to some intriguing confrontations with authority. George's one outstanding ambition was to become the leading northern jockey in the UK, currently held by Eddie Hide, and he was around 50 wins adrift of that total. However, shoulder problems incurred when falling off a horse at work in summer 2004 caused him to stop riding in a bid to rehabilitate and regain strength in his arm. However, on the advice of the Jockey Club doctor, George in the end acknowledged defeat in March 2005 and retired.
