Richard Hills, 1st Jockey for Hamdan Al Maktoum. Photo by Nick Higgins at KemptonAlthough jockeys are quite difficult to approach on the racecourse, Richard is one of those rare jockeys who does have time for everybody. He will gladly stop, talk to you and explain his thoughts.

It is amazing to think that after more than 25 years riding, Richard & his twin brother, Michael, are not that many winners apart in the total number of career winners.

Richard's father is successful UK trainer, Barry Hills.
However, Richard did not serve his apprenticeship at home.
Instead, he joined Tom Jones at Newmarket & rode for him for about 18 years.
His first winner was on Border Dawn at Doncaster on October 26th, 1979.

The alliance with Tom Jones meant that he has been riding for Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum since 1982.
His first big winner was the Ascot Gold Cup on Ashal in 1990 and since then he has booted home a total of 83 Group winners.

His first Classic was the 1,000 Guineas on Harayir with an enterprising ride and he repeated the feat again in 2000 for John Gosden on Lahan, a tricky ride.
On both occasions the winning owner was his main employer, Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum.

He became Al Maktoum's 2nd jockey in 1995 and took up the lead jockey role on the retirement of Willie Carson in 1997.
Certainly his biggest win to date has been the 1999 Dubai World Cup on Almutawakel. Richard Hills, 2nd left, San Sebastian, August 15th, 1993, with his brother Michael and the Borrego twins, Jose-Luis & Matias

Richard has worked hard at riding winners abroad as well as in the UK.
His first regular foreign ventures were to Spain in 1992 to ride for the powerful Cuadra Alborada stable trained by the Argentinian, Enrique Bedouret.

That year in Spain, Richard managed to win 20 races from 71 rides and finished 2nd in the Spanish Jockeys table by prize money won.

In 1993, he started riding in Dubai in the British winter and he has ridden there with great success.

Around 1998, Richard came back from Dubai with a new reformed riding style which combined US & European styles of riding. He now rides with toe-in-the-iron, stirrups a bit shorter and uses "backhanders" a lot less. It is now much easier to tell the two twins apart when Richard is not riding in the Hamdan colours!

2000 has certainly been Richard's best year to date with 81 domestic winners and an all-time high of 14 Group winners.

However, Richard and the rest of British racing were eager to see how the exciting 2 year old colt, Nayef, turned out to be in his Classic campaign.
Richard rode the half-brother to Nashwan on both his starts in 2000, proclaiming him to be the best juvenile he had ever sat on.

Nayef was given time to come to himself by trainer Marcus Tregonning and in the latter part of the season the colt lifted the Champion Stakes, Group 1, along with the Rose of Lancaster Stakes (Grp3.) and Select Stakes (Grp3). They were to later also capture the 2002 Dubai Sheema Classic which had Group 1 status.

Richard began the 2001 flat season by taking the Greenham Stakes (Grp3) on the flashy chesnut, Munir. Along with the Nayef victories, he also won the Woodbine International & Price of Wales Stakes with Mutamam, the Q.E.II Stakes with a great ride on the lead with Summoner (33-1) & the Prix Dollar on Albarahin.

Richard is the all-time leading jockey in Dubai in terms of wins (349) and prize money to mid-March'03 (AED 20.3m).

Away from the racecourse, Richard dedicates his time to his family, wife Jaci and son Patrick. He also tries to fit in his hobbies of golf, shooting, watersports and ornamental ducks when he can.
