Alan Munro. Photo by Jose-Antonio RodriguezNot only is he one of the all-time great jockeys, Alan is a very charming and personable individual and also a thinker.
Not content with just winning races, in 2000 he made a courageous decision to take a sabbatical to better himself and discover life outside racing.

His intention was to return to riding a fitter, tougher and more mentally agile jockey, enabling him to ride at the highest class for another 10 years. Sure enough in early 2005 he showed up in New Zealand where he booted home some winners to get fit for a comeback to racing in the UK.

It took Alan about 7 years to start to make his mark in racing. He is recognised along with Darryl Holland as being the first of the jockeys to introduce the American style of riding into the UK in the early 1990's.

Alan's work riding experience in California in the late 1980's helped mould the characteristic syle of his in the saddle.
His style was already moulded to the US "toe-in-the iron & flat back with telescopic whip" when he arrived in Madrid in May 1990 to lift the Spanish Derby on the wild Akelarre.

In Spain in the 1990's, Alan was a popular favourite with owners and he lifted many big races, mainly for the Cuadra Alborada.
He has an affinty for tight tracks and was an ace around the notorious San Sebastian track in the 1990's.

Then in early 1991, Alan landed a prestigious contract to ride in the green silks of Fahd Salman, whose horses were mainly stabled with Paul Cole at Whatcombe.

In early June, Alan lifted racing's jewel by taking the Epsom Derby on the great Generous. They were to later defeat subsequent Arc winner Suave Dancer in the Irish Derby and then sizzle home in the King George and Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Stakes in late July.

Definitely a jockey any owner would want on their side, Alan tries every time, at any track. To date he has notched up 39 Group races around the world !
